Pies flag fancies with Houston? | 01:43

1:00PM – SHOCK PICK SWAP TURNS TABLES ON TRADE PERIOD

In a shock trade, Carlton has come from nowhere to secure Hawthorn’s first-round pick.

The Blues have dealt their future first and second-round selections in exchange for Pick 14.

It’s the third confirmed trade in the past hour alone, and it has thrown West Coast a major curve ball in its negotiations to deal on Tom Barrass.

Hawthorn’s first-rounder was expected to be used as the centrepiece to acquire Barrass, but a move for the star interceptor now seems more difficult than it was just a few hours ago.

West Coast is also in negotiations for Richmond’s Liam Baker, with the machinations of that move now in a state of flux.

It gives Carlton the No. 12 and No. 14 picks in this year’s draft — and suddenly, the Blues are seemingly back alive in their Dan Houston chase.

“This is a bombshell from Hawthorn, and it paves the way for a bit of movement now in the trade period,” Nine’s Tom Morris said of the move on AFL Trade Radio.

“Absolutely (the Blues) are back in the ball game (for Houston).

“When you’ve got 12 and 14 in this year’s draft, you could potentially offer one of them and then see if you can be back in the game for Dan Houston.”

12:45PM – ANOTHER PICK SWAP CONFIRMED

After nothing for three days, we have two trades in the space of an hour on Friday afternoon — both involving the Lions.

Brisbane has traded Pick 73 and a future second-rounder to Carlton in exchange for Picks 34 and 66.

It gives the Lions even more draft points flexibility after already accumulating 792 points in an earlier trade with Richmond.

12:15PM – LIONS, TIGERS FORMALLY AGREE TO PICK SWAP

Brisbane and Richmond have come together on the first trade in four days, swapping five picks in this year’s draft — confirmed by AFL House on Friday afternoon.

The Lions will give their first-rounder — currently Pick 20 — to the Tigers in exchange for two second-rounders, 32 and 42, and two third-rounders, 43 and 45.

The selections, culminating in 792 draft points, will aid Brisbane in matching rival bids for father-son prospect Levi Ashcroft and Academy talent Sam Marshall.

The trade also hands Richmond its third pick inside the top-25 in November’s national draft, with trades for Liam Baker, Daniel Rioli and Shai Bolton likely still to come.

11:00AM – ‘NOT MUCH MOVEMENT’ ON STAR EAGLE’S MOVE

West Coast and Hawthorn reportedly aren’t making much progress on a deal for wantaway defender Tom Barrass.

According to Seven’s Ryan Daniels, there is ‘a while to go’ in negotiations between the clubs on trade terms.

It’s understood the Eagles are asking for a future second-round draft pick in addition to the Hawks’ Pick 14, but Hawthorn isn’t willing to do that at this stage.

A prolonged hold-up on this deal could further delay West Coast’s arrangement with Richmond for Liam Baker, who is expected to yield the first-rounder the Eagles receive from the Hawks.

9:40AM – YOUNG LION REQUESTS TRADE TO VIC CLUB

We have some movement early on day five, with Brisbane midfielder Harry Sharp reportedly requesting a trade to Melbourne.

The Lions and Demons will now ‘get started on talks’ on a trade price, according to AFL Media’s Riley Beveridge.

Seven’s Mitch Cleary reported a late pick or pick swap will get it done, adding the deal could be filed as early as today.

The draft capital heading back Brisbane’s way is important in the context of its need for draft points to secure Levi Ashcroft and Sam Marshall.

Melbourne currently holds Picks 5, 28, 40, 49, 54 and 65 at the national draft.

The 21-year-old — who is contracted for next season — has managed 16 senior games across four AFL seasons with the Lions and is a product of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

Elsewhere at Brisbane, football boss Danny Daly ruled out the possibility of hunting unsigned St Kilda veteran Tim Membrey as part of the club’s hunt to replace Joe Daniher.

“No, we haven’t gone down the path of Tim as yet,” Daly told AFL Trade Radio on Friday morning.

“Right here and now I wouldn’t say that he would be, no.”

6:00AM – LIONS CUB MEETS WITH RIVAL AS PIES’ PRICE FEAR OVER HOUSTON DEAL REVEALED

Brisbane running machine Harry Sharp, who owns the Draft Combine 2km record, has met with Melbourne about a potential move.

Seven’s Mitch Cleary reported Sharp is in the sights of the Demons after playing six AFL games in the Lions’ premiership campaign. He was an emergency for the Grand Final.

The 21-year-old is contracted for next year but Melbourne believes he would fit a need with Lachie Hunter retired and Alex Neal-Bullen now at Adelaide.

Meanwhile negotiations over the Dan Houston deal remain contentious with Collingwood reportedly concerned over Port Adelaide’s asking price.

The Herald Sun’s Jon Ralph reported the Magpies are keen to secure picks 13 and 23 from Gold Coast in exchange for John Noble and a future first, but don’t want to send both picks plus wantaway forward Joe Richards across to Port Adelaide for Houston.

That’s because they believe the Power would trade pick 13 away to Sydney in exchange for picks 19 and 22, effectively giving them three top-25 picks plus a player for Houston.

Carlton’s slim chances of landing Houston continue to fade due to their unwillingness to trade a 2024 draft pick.
